The Healing Qualities of Turmeric and When to Use Them

Plants are used for a variety of reasons in everyday life. One reason, in particular, is their use in herbal medicine. There are few herbs that everyone should have in their kitchen for cooking and for additional health benefits. One important herb or spice everyone should have is Turmeric. Its benefits include anti-inflammatory properties, and antioxidant properties, along with many more life-changing benefits. The main substance found in Tumeric that causes these benefits is Curcumin.

The first benefit that Curcumin has stemmed from it being a natural anti-inflammatory compound. This means that when you have it in your diet, it naturally helps your body fight inflammation whether it is due to chronic inflammation or other reasons. It is even said to match the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs we use today. Because it helps with anti-inflammation it also has the added ability in helping prevent heart disease. Studies show if you use Turmeric in your diet regularly it can help decrease the risk of experiencing a heart attack. The anti-inflammatory properties also aid in the prevention and maintenance of arthritis and joint pain or inflammation.

Another benefit of the Curcumin in Turmeric is its capability to increase antioxidants in the body. It does this by destroying free radicals and then stimulating our bodies antioxidant defences. Another perk of this benefit is its capability to help prevent cancer by reducing the growth of cancerous cells. Additional benefits of Curcumin include its aide in brain function. It achieves this goal in ways such as helping prevent Alzheimer’s disease, fighting depression, and having increased focus and brain functionality. Studies show it is also able to help with the ageing process.

The above benefits of Turmeric is incredible, however knowing how and when to use this herb, will help alter your life and help increase your livelihood. The following are just some examples everyone should remember in case they one day need them.

1- Sometimes applying Turmeric to a body part that is in pain or has swelling can help reduce the pain and reduce the inflammation that causes the swelling. To do this mix it with a little water or coconut oil. Apply this mixture to your skin for about 15 minutes then remove. Beware this can stain skin for a little bit of time.

2-To use Turmeric to help fight a cold take one part powdered Turmeric followed by three parts of raw honey. Then mix them together. To help fight an oncoming cold, eat a teaspoon of this mixture about every 2 hours to help boost your immunity and then lower inflammation within the body.

3- For a natural sleep remedy, a very common recipe is Golden Milk. To make this, bring about two cups of milk of your choice to a boil with one teaspoon of organic powdered Turmeric and one teaspoon of organic powdered Ginger. Turn off the heat and let it cool and simmer then add about 1 to 2 tablespoons of raw honey. To add an extra effect add half a teaspoon of Nutmeg, half a teaspoon of Cinnamon, and half a teaspoon of Cardamom to the mixture.

4- To kill any viruses or cold that may be in your body add a tablespoon or two of powdered turmeric to your soup of choice. To add an extra fighting defence add a bit of fresh Oregano.

5- For a natural teeth whitener add a drop or two of water to powdered Turmeric and then take your toothbrush and dip it in it and brush your teeth with it. Leave on your teeth for about 5 minutes. Then make sure to rinse your mouth with water thoroughly and then brush with your regular toothpaste afterwards. You do not have to do this every day just do it once in a while to brighten up your smile.

6- To help build strong immunity and fight inflammation, and infections every day; brew a nice Turmeric tea. Boil 1 to 2 cups of water and then stir in about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of ground or fresh grated Turmeric. then allowed to sit and simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes and strain before you drink it. For an added defence and benefit stirring honey and fresh lemon juice.

While Turmeric has many of these benefits, sometimes just taking Turmeric isn’t enough. It is said to add a little bit of black pepper to help our body be able to dissolve the Turmeric and use its effects and beneficial qualities. After reading this hopefully, you now have an understanding of why Turmeric must be in every kitchen cabinet.

If you can grow Turmeric you can eventually even use the different parts like the root for other aided benefits and herbal remedies. If you prefer some people even take the extra step and buy Curcumin or Turmeric supplement pills in order to get their daily necessities. One thing to note is, organic is preferred, because some spices we buy include pesticides and other added additives ad for us.
